Installation of heating mat on the wall

Installation of heating mat on the wall

Can the excess heating mat be laid on the wall under the tiles? Yes. This is often practiced in small rooms with a large permanent building on the floor, where the heating surface of the floor is too small to heat the room, or in cases where we have bought too long a product. In cases where we have exposed or unbuilt walls, wall heating is performed in them.

Can the heating mat be shortened?

Never, under any circumstances, shorten a heating mat. Heating mats are made of heating wires with a fixed resistance, and shortening them can lead to damage or even burnout.

What to do when the heating mat is too long?

  • Do not install the mat under a bathtub or shower tray. However, heating mats such as the RAYCHEM Quicknet can be installed under a walk-in shower.
  • Excess heating mats can be installed in the wall under tiles, provided that it will be an "exposed" wall. NOTE: Do not install the heating mat in a wall that will be covered by a washing machine, furniture or other built-ins.
  • It is a good idea to use the excess heating mat for drying towels.

What kind of heating mat for the wall under the tiles?

The RAYCHEM QuickNet-160 model with a heating power of 160 W/m² will be suitable. This is the same heating mat that we install on the floor under the tiles in the bathroom.

How to install the heating mat in the wall?

The place of special attention is the transition of the heating cable from the floor to the wall.

  • Do not bend the heating cable a strong 90° angle! Do it with a gentle curve.
  • Usually the minimum bending radius of the heating cable is its diameter x 6.
  • Shoe more of the wall at this point to increase the bending arc of the heating cable.
  • Carefully fill this area with glue without leaving an "air cushion".

Before taking photographic documentation, write on the wall, for example, with chalk, the distances from the walls and floor for the installed heating mat.

Heating mat in the wall, reheating small rooms

Bathrooms, as a rule, are quite small rooms, plus there is a lot of furniture and appliances: washing machine, dryer, bathtub, shower, sink, toilet, cabinets and additional furniture. For this reason, the floor area that can accommodate electric underfloor heating is relatively small.

In many cases, it may be too small to maintain the optimal temperature. In this case, installing heating mats under the tiles on the walls allows you to increase the heating power of the system. If we have quite a lot of exposed wall, the mats are installed horizontally starting from the floor. This makes the comfort, especially after getting out of the bath, much higher.

A similar solution can also be used in other small rooms. While a basement or pantry should have a slightly lower temperature due to the food stored in them, small hallways and especially vestibules also often need additional reheating due to the small floor area.
